Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at colakidsconsignment@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

It can feel overwhelming at first, but start by focusing on the current season’s items. Gather everything, but don’t stress about doing it all in one go. Begin with a small amount and save the rest for the next sale. Over time, you’ll have organized closets with extra space!

If you’re planning to use baby equipment for future children, consider selling the older items and upgrading to newer ones. Baby equipment stored in hot attics can degrade over time and become unsellable. It’s often more profitable to sell these items sooner rather than later.

Set aside a space in your home to sort through your items for a few days (and reassure your significant other it won’t take too long!). Gather items from all around—children’s bedrooms, the attic, garage, playroom, etc.

  • Wash and inspect clothing in good light.
  • Iron and hang clothing items, separated by size and gender.
  • Package non-clothing items and prepare them for tagging.
  • Make sure all pieces are present and check for recalls at www.cpsc.gov.
  • Price and tag your items online.

Before heading to drop-off, organize the clothing by size and gender to make the process smoother.

Additionally, tape your consignor number inside clothing with masking tape to help us return items to the correct consignor if the tag falls off.

Use safety pins to attach the waistband to the top of the hanger, so the pants don’t slide around. Hangers with paper covers work best for pants, skirts, and shorts. Shoppers prefer to see the knees and seat without taking the item off the hanger.

Hang the shirt on the hanger and attach the pants or shorts to the back of the hanger using safety pins. Do not pin the pants to the shirt itself, as the weight of the pants can create holes. Be sure the pants are on the hanger and visible, so customers don’t have to remove the shirt to see them.

Make sure that outfits are the same size—don’t mix sizes in one set.

The best option is to use the original packaging, if you still have it. If not, XXL Ziploc bags work well for bedding.

If you have multiple pieces, do not create a tag for each item. Instead, write one tag describing the entire set, and label the individual pieces (e.g., 1 of 5, 2 of 5).

Be descriptive when tagging bedding to ensure buyers know exactly what they’re getting.

Wrap puzzles in plastic wrap and secure them with clear packing tape. Make sure the tag is visible and easily accessible.

For boxed puzzles and games, make sure all pieces are included and seal the box with clear packing tape. Please be considerate and do not sell incomplete games or puzzles.

Sets of books can be placed in gallon or 2-gallon Ziploc bags. Alternatively, use plastic wrap to secure the set and attach the tag with clear packing tape.

When selling book sets, try to group them by reading level. Individual books do not need to be placed in bags.

Keep in mind that you are selling gently used items.

Pricing Suggestions:

  • For items you plan to donate, consider allowing them to go half-price during the sale. It’s better to get something than nothing!
  • Price items at about 1/4 to 1/3 of their original retail value. For name-brand or boutique items (e.g., OshKosh, Gymboree), price closer to 1/3. For example, a GAP t-shirt that sold for $10.99 could be priced around $3.50 for good condition, $4.50 for excellent condition, or $5.50 if the tags are still attached.

One exception to this rule is indoor/outdoor toys like playhouses. These are in high demand, and you can price them at 1/3 to 1/2 of their original retail value.

Remember to price based on what you would be willing to pay, and avoid letting emotions influence pricing.

Ensure that all pieces of a toy are securely fastened together using zip ties, packing tape, or Ziploc bags. We try to minimize children playing with the toys at the sale, but securing small parts is key to preventing loss.

Place the price tag inside the bag and tape it to the front so it’s secure and visible.

Place small items like socks, hair bows, and belts in Ziploc bags. Taping the bag shut helps deter shoppers from opening bags and potentially losing small pieces. Tape your tag securely to the outside of the bag.

Consignors earn 65% of the sale price of their items with the potential to earn a higher percentage through volunteering.

Becoming a Consignment Master means following these best practices:

  1. Presentation Matters: Press your clothes and present toys well. Clean items sell better!
  2. Smart Pricing: Stick to pricing around 1/3 of the original retail price for best results.
  3. Provide Sizing Notes: If needed, include notes on sizing for clarity.
  4. Follow the Rules: Read consignor instructions twice to avoid missing any key steps.
  5. Group Wisely: Group similar items together, and don’t hide worn items within sets.

Straight pins are dangerous, and clothespins don’t stay attached and take up too much space on the racks.

The consignor fee helps cover the overhead costs of running the sale, such as rent, utilities, advertising, and insurance.
